On Friday, May 9 the ACT I Mainstage Series will present “On Golden
Pond,” at the Palace, directed by Nancy Beckman.

Norman Thayer, a retired professor, played by Jim Hilliard, and his wife
Ethel, portrayed by Sue Gates, have had a summer cottage on Golden Pond
since early in their marriage. This summer their daughter Chelsea,
portrayed by Halane Cummings, whom they haven't seen for years, returns
for Norman's 8oth birthday. She and her fiancé Bill (Tony Bopp) are on
their way to Europe the next day but will be back in a couple of weeks to
pick up Bill’s son Billy, portrayed by Vinton-Shellsburg 7th grader Will
Hancock. Charlie, the mailman who's known Norman and Ethel Thayer for
years, is played by David Gates.

“On Golden Pond” is a beautiful story of mending and developing family
relationships. Sponsored by Farmers Savings Bank and Trust, tickets may
be reserved for this production by calling the ACT I Box Office at 472-
9957.

BLACKJACK!

There are those, like my friend Duane, who beat the house the fun way,
using so-called intuition and just plain dumb luck, but the M.I.T.
students in “21” do it the nerdy honors math student way, by counting
cards and shrewdly calculating odds.

The Palace Theatre opens on Sunday (note: not Friday!), May 11 at 7 p.m
with “21.” This casino-breaking thriller plays through Thursday, May 15
nightly and in our Monday 2 p.m. Matinee. “21” runs just over two hours
and is rated PG-13 for violence, sexual content and some partial nudity.

Most of us pay for college by scrimping, saving and getting another job,
but Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) uses his proclivity for numbers to beat
the odds and the Vegas casino bosses. He and his team coordinated by
Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey) and including the beautiful Jill Taylor (Kate
Bosworth), manage to make the most of their weekends, with quick and
profitable trips to Las Vegas. Soon, however, casino security officer
(Laurence Fishburne) starts to suspect something. Is the team’s winning
run about to come to an end?
